It’s May! It’s time to be happy again. And there’s no better place to get happy than San Francisco in May.
It’s said that May is the month of transition, new beginnings, fun and celebrations. From beginning to end, San Francisco brings a month of all of the above.
The fun starts on May 4th with the How Weird Street Faire, San Francisco’s annual celebration of peace, creativity and, yes, weirdness. This is a festival where art converges with technology and general weirdness. Multiple stages of electronic music, weirdly exotic shopping opportunities, eclectic food offerings and everyone in the weirdest costumes they can devise. It’s truly an only-in-San Francisco experience.
Next comes Mother’s Day and there’s no sweeter place to honor your Mom than the City by the Bay. Take Mom on a Bay cruise brunch or a sunset cruise with dinner. The Giants are in town and a baseball game with Mom is always a hit! San Francisco is a city known for its amazing cuisine. Bring Mom to the city for brunch or dinner and you’re guaranteed to find a place to treat her to a fabulous eating experience. Or what about a Mother’s day hike? Grab some food, take the ferry out to Angel Island, make the hike to the top and treat Mom to some 360 views of the Bay area. The ideas are as endless as your love for Mom.
May also brings the world famous Bay to Breakers 12K party…oops, 12K race. This is more than a race, it’s a moving festival. Whether you come to race or come to cheer the racers on, it’s a must do. The race starts at the Bay, moves through 9 of San Francisco’s most notable neighborhoods, climbs the steep hill on Hayes Street and ends at the ocean. Along the way you can run, walk, drink, enjoy amazing views, and just soak in the life, laughter and energy that personifies San Francisco. Oh, and don’t forget your costume!
May continues on with Carnaval San Francisco, the largest multi-cultural celebration in California. Covering 17 blocks in San Francisco’s Mission District, Carnaval is a celebration of Latin American and Caribbean cultural arts and traditions. The 2 day festival is Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend and includes a spectacular parade with floats depicting multi-cultural themes, international food, music, dance, arts and crafts.
Finally, May wraps up on the 31st with an open air sunset party on Treasure Island. If you haven’t been to Treasure Island yet, this is a reason to go there. The views of San Francisco and the entire Bay are breathtaking. The headlining DJ, Solomun, is one of the most influential DJ’s of our time, and the food and drinks are never-ending. This is a party not to be missed!
